Your pre-long weekend rundown
When we say we’re making this a safer and more affordable city, we mean it. This past week, we put justice-involved New Yorkers on paths to brighter futures, improved Bronx traffic safety, and helped our older neighbors build confidence using new technology. We acted to:
Make our city even safer for NYC families – Put New Yorkers on the path to brighter futures – After a successful pilot program, we're expanding our Commercial Driver’s License training program for justice-involved New Yorkers to connect more New Yorkers with good-paying jobs in an industry facing significant labor shortages. This multi-million-dollar investment will help hundreds of additional New Yorkers secure high-paying trucking jobs, keep people out of the justice system, and boost our city’s workforce.
Make Bronx streets safer for all – Alongside multiple city agencies, we launched the next phase of infrastructure improvements that will upgrade traffic safety features, add bike lanes, plant trees along road medians, improve street lighting and more along Grand Concourse.
Improve older New Yorkers’ digital literacy – Our NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development, NYC Aging, and NY Public Library partnered to expand our “Neighborhood Tech Help” pilot program to the Bronx and Upper Manhattan. The service provides in-person assistance to older New Yorkers in affordable housing and older adult centers so they can use the internet, smartphones, and computers with confidence. $1 BILLION back in New Yorkers’ pockets

Every day, everywhere, we continue to deliver for you. Our more than 300,000-person team works day and night to ensure that the “City That Never Sleeps” stays safe, gets even more affordable, and remains the best place to raise your family. This week, we took action to:

  • Make our city even safer for NYC families – Thanks to the brave men and women of the NYPD, our city is having a historically safe summer and we’re making America’s safest big city even safer. In July, overall crime dropped 5.6%, kicking off our SEVENTH straight quarter of driving down crime. The first seven months of the year also had the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims in recorded history, and July in our subway system also saw a record low number of crimes (when excluding the 2020 and 2021 pandemic years).
  • Continue to improve quality-of-life borough by borough – The NYPD is expanding its Quality of Life Teams, which have already responded to over 23,400 calls and decreased non-emergency response times by an average of 47 minutes since first launching as a pilot program in April. They tackle the everyday issues that impact New Yorkers’ sense of safety, like public drug use and illegal mopeds. Building on the pilot's success in key areas across the boroughs, the program expanded to every precinct in Brooklyn last week, and will continue to grow to include both precincts citywide and NYCHA before the end of the month.
  • Save New Yorkers $1 BILLION on college costs – Following our successful initiative to help wipe out $360 million in student loans for 100,000 city employees, we’re expanding the program citywide to ALL New Yorkers. This first-of-its-kind municipal program will support approximately 3 million New York City residents reduce student loan payments and assist with tuition savings, keeping up to $1 billion in New Yorkers’ pockets. ↳ Three things to know this week:

  1. The NYC Health Department is monitoring a Legionnaires’ cluster in Central Harlem (ZIP codes: 10027, 10030, 10035, 10037, and 10039). If you live or work in the area and have flu-like symptoms, including cough, fever, chills, muscle aches, or trouble breathing, please seek medical attention right away to get treated. If you don’t have a health care provider, visit NYC Health + Hospitals.

  2. The Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) still need your help! The ACC remains at critical capacity and is calling on loving New Yorkers like you to help reduce their shelter population by fostering or adopting a fuzzy family member. Browse all their adorable animals here!

  3. You can get some fresh air at Manhattan's car-free Summer Streets this Saturday, August 9! From 7 AM to 3 PM, take advantage of open roads across the borough, free Citi Bike rides (Day Pass code: LYFTSUMMER25), delicious free food samples, World Cup-themed activities, public art, and more.

These pictures come from the New York Public Library’s collection and date back to the 1800s. From famous landmarks to the block you grew up on, chances are this map has a photo of it many decades ago. Take a look!

Three things to know this week (21-July-2025)

Every week, our team works day and night to make this a safer and more affordable city for you and your family. From tackling key quality-of-life issues to ensuring more New Yorkers have access to green space this summer, here’s how we delivered for you this past week:

  • Improving quality of life, block by block – Following a successful pilot, we’re expanding our “Every Block Counts” initiative citywide to address historically high violent crime on specific residential blocks across the five boroughs. By getting certain blocks intensive city resources, we’ve reduced crime and restored quality of life in those areas. Every New Yorker deserves to feel safe in their community, and “Every Block Counts” makes that possible for more of us.

  • Putting more families within walking distance of a park – This is the greatest city in the world to be a kid, and we just made it even better. We opened up 11 schoolyards to the public during evenings, on weekends, and during the summer so an additional 20,000 New Yorkers are now within a 10-minute walk of green space! These spaces shouldn’t be locked away when school’s out for the day or summer, and, now, more of these green spaces are open to the community and permanently funded in our city’s budget.

↳ Three things to know this week:

  1. The Charter Revision Commission is evaluating how we can make NYC’s government more responsive and transparent, especially when it comes to housing, land use, and elections. They’re still incorporating feedback from New Yorkers like you, and their final public input session is on Monday, July 21 — attend in-person in Manhattan or online.

  2. Our popular Rise Up NYC FREE concert series is back! This summer, we're bringing the artists you know and love to a stage near you, with performances by A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Big Daddy Kane, Lisa Lisa, and more. This series promotes free and safe fun by bringing together New Yorkers from all walks of life to enjoy an unforgettable show. Check out the schedule here!

  3. Your local firehouse can turn a fire hydrant into a sprinkler for you! Find your local station, fill out a form, and they’ll fit the hydrant with a special spray cap to legally cool off your block without wasting water. Remember: never open a hydrant yourself; it wastes 1,000 gallons of water per minute and reduces critical live-saving water pressure for putting out fires.

↳ FREE events this weekend:

Before you go, did you know

...you can experience the US Open for FREE next month? From August 18 to August 23, the US Open’s beloved Fan Week is back! Go watch top players’ practices, listen to live DJ sets, check out stalls with free games, food samples, photo booths, and more — all at no cost to you. Last year's US Open was its biggest ever, bringing in over 1 million fans, so don’t miss out on all the excitement this year. After all, it’s happening right in Queens! Register for a free Fan Access Pass now, then browse the events schedule and make your plans.

🎾 💨 💨

Stay cool and enjoy your weekend ahead,  There’s nothing like a city summer, so get out there if you can and go make the most of it.

Three things to know this week (03-July-2025)

Summer is here and seasonal celebrations are near! As we gear up for a long weekend celebrating our nation’s birth with friends and family, I wanted to give you a run-down on how we continued to “Get Stuff Done” for you across the five boroughs this week.

Most significantly, the City Council UNANIMOUSLY approved our “Best Budget Ever” that invests in making our city safer and more affordable!

Our new budget puts money back in New Yorkers’ pockets by putting NYC on the path to universal childcare for low-income families if our new pilot is successful, invests more in cultural institutions and libraries, provides funding for legal services for immigrants, funds programs to help New Yorkers suffering from severe mental illness, and so much more, all while fulfilling earlier promises like eliminating NYC personal income taxes for low-income New Yorkers, creating a universal after-school program, investing nearly $25 billion in capital to create more affordable housing, and investing in key public safety programs to keep NYC America’s safest big city. Read all about it here.

Here’s how else we delivered for you during this shortened week:

  • Continuing to drive down crime – Thanks to our administration's efforts to hit crime head on and address quality-of-life issues across the five boroughs, we’ve reduced crime for SIX QUARTERS in a row now — since January 2024. And this past month, every major crime category saw declines. That’s no coincidence — this achievement is because of our administration’s upstream investments and the downstream solutions of the brave men and women of the NYPD.

  • Making 22 miles of streets car-free  – We unveiled our largest Summer Streets expansion ever that will turn 22 miles of city streets car-free this month and next! Every Saturday between July 26 and August 23, from 7 AM to 3 PM, you can enjoy open roads to stroll, socialize, cycle, or just take in the fresh air. There will be free Citi Bike day passes (in-app promo code: LYFTSUMMER25), walking groups, public art, and more. This will also be the first time that New Yorkers can travel the length of Manhattan on a car-free route!

  • Increasing public bathroom access – Futuristic bathrooms are coming to five neighborhoods with insufficient access to public restrooms! These ready-made designs can be built faster and cheaper than regular restrooms, and they’re part of our effort to expand bathroom access citywide. And when you’re on the go and got to go, remember to use our free public restroom map to find a bathroom near you.

↳ Three things to know this week:

  1. The Charter Revision Commission is evaluating how we can make NYC’s government more responsive and transparent. Their interim final report is out with five reform proposals the Commission may put on the ballot for NYC voters, four on housing and land use and one on primary elections. They’re still incorporating feedback from New Yorkers like you, and their next public input session is on Monday, July 7 — attend in-person in Manhattan or online.

  2. Our city is home to 13 magnificent miles of shoreline! If you’re looking to hit the beach this long weekend, a superb summer staycation is just a short train ride or ferry trip away. Find a beach near you, then check out the free beach events happening all summer long.

  3. Still looking for the perfect July 4th barbecue spot? Check out NYC Parks’ designated BBQ areas, where you can whip up classic holiday fare right in one of our city’s beautiful parks. Remember to always be safe and smart when barbecuing and be sure to clean up after your gathering.

↳ FREE events this weekend:

Before you go, did you know

...it’s the 49th year of the iconic Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks show? The stunning celebration of America’s Independence Day has brought millions of viewers to the New York City waterfront since 1978! This Friday, their phenomenal fireworks will soar 1,000 feet over the East River using 80,000 firework shells in 30 beautiful colors. Viewers can enjoy performances by the Jonas Brothers, Lenny Kravitz, Keke Palmer, and more. If you didn’t get one of our free tickets earlier this week, find a public viewing spot here or tune in on NBC at home!

As we sit down for barbecues and gaze up at sparkling skies with our loved ones on Friday, we must reflect on the sacrifices of those who made our country what it is today. From the revolutionaries centuries ago to the everyday people who fought for racial justice, workers’ rights, LGBTQ+ equality, and more, today, let’s celebrate the opportunities and freedoms they fought for and won for us all.

No matter how or where you’re celebrating, I hope you have a safe and happy 4th!

Your mayor,

Eric
