'The Period Party' Rewriting the Right of Passage for Menstrual Hygiene Day

Brown Girl Magazine The Desai Foundation present 'The Period Party' — an evening dedicated to celebrating our periods and rewriting the right of passage — on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at the WeWork headquarters in the JetBlue building in Long Island City.

Poor menstrual hygiene caused by a lack of education, the archaic taboos and stigma, limited access to hygienic menstrual products and poor sanitation infrastructure undermines the educational opportunities, health and overall social status of women and girls around the world. As a result, millions of women and girls are kept from reaching their full potential.

Menstrual Hygiene Day is a global advocacy platform that brings together the voices and actions to break the silence, raises awareness and changes negative social norms around the world. Secondly, it aims to engage decision-makers at global, national and local levels to increase the political priority for menstrual hygiene and catalyze action.

Be a part of the movement through the #PledgeYourPeriod campaign — an online initiative led by The Desai Foundation to firstly, raise funds for their annual 'Asani Sanitary Napkin Program,' which provides women and girls in rural India with menstrual hygiene education and resources, and secondly, it gives you a chance to denounce period shame on social media with a graphic, photo and caption of your choice — read more here.

Comfort food and drinks will be served. Period stories, photos from period parties, and allies are welcome.

Your RSVP guarantees entry. Photo I.D. is required at the front desk.
