Sushi Yasu

Specialties

Chef's choice (Omakase) starts from $40 per person.  You can enjoy high quality sushi in much cheaper price. You don't need to go to Manhattan for Omakase! All the chefs are Japanese, and are specializing authentic Japanese sushi. We like to present freshness of the fish without masking it with too much sauce or spices.

History

Established in 2004.

We started as a humble fish market in residential area, and sushi chef Yasu decided sell to-go sushi, put them in a refregerator, made a small sushi bar as a decoration with only three chairs .  Against his expectation, customers started sitting down at the sushi bar to enjoy his sushi in the middle of the fish market.  One day, a customer called us and made a reservation with 5 people.  We rushed to buy a table and chairs.  More and more people made reservations and we ended up having 18 saets.  We were still running the fish market business as well, but Agriculture department came, and told us to turn into a restaurant since we don't look like a fish market anymore.  Yasu's sushi became more popular, and unfortunately, we couldn't fit in all the customers in such a small space, so we moved to a bigger space.

This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Forest Hills. I've tried all of them. The servers are very attentive and nice. I love the fresh sushi and reassuring ramen on a chilly winter evening. Their appetizers are good too. It's down below street level and seems tucked away like a amazing little secret

Austin Street in Forest Hills is often touted as a worthwhile day destination for those in Queens, and even from outside the borough, but whether one considers that true or not, its food is certainly not. This has begun to change in the past few years, but most dining establishment along the commercial strip remain mediocre at best. Slightly below street level, Sushi Yasu is easy to miss. Nothing distinguishes it from other sushi places in the area. And indeed, when first entering the right side of the restaurant, it appears much like a typical area Japanese sushi restaurant that is not run by folks who have had any level of proper training in sushi making; a few two-top and four-top tables in a narrow space, it looks more like a take-out joint.

Great and fast! A hidden gem it's door is downstairs in those little urban 2 story store strips. I was alone and in a rush at the Austin street forest hills area. There's a dozen restaraunts worth checking out, but I had 35 minutes to an appt about 6 long blocks away. Just worked out at the local New York Sports Club using my citywide association; and I needed protein, fast. So the pizza and bagel joints weren't an option ; cause it's 530pm, dinner time, need meat or fish. No time for fancy steaks at 'Aged' I really want to try. Walk in told waitress I'm in a crazy hurry so get it out and Serve it with the check. She did it so fast I left her a 10$ cash tip on a 30$ meal. I had the California thingie rolls with fish on top everybody has variations on. They added scallion to theirs; distinctly awesome mixture

My husband and I discovered Yasu's sushi hidden within his then fish market on Yellowstone over a decade ago and have been loyal to him ever since. With him, we were taught how to eat and savor sushi. He reprimand us for inhaling the first set of rolls he ever served us. We couldn't help it-they we're so freakin tasty! Eat deliberately and savor! For the price and quality, his sushi is the best! We LOVE his omakase. We typically do the $60 pp (~$100 pp with drinks, tax and tip). The fish is fresh...he'll test the fish before serving it to you! When combined with his rice, we close our eyes, savor, and involuntarily giggle and groan...it's sooo good! Tuna (all of them, esp the TORO!), salmon, scallop, shrimp...they all melt in your mouth! We request for him directly to prepare any of our orders. Even if we do take out, we have the uncanny ability to know if he prepares himself or not. Our non-omakase go-to-faves are chirashi, eel avocado, spicy tuna, squid with garlic butter, toro, baby Marilyn (scallop pieces), and Marilyn Mon-roll. Enjoy it any or all with sake or beer! His sushi is our gold standard when going to other seats.

This sushi restaurant is ahead of generation! They provide vegan and gluten-free options which are a tremendous plus over the other sushi spots near. They are reasonably priced, and though I ordered take-out, the woman behind the register was so kind and helpful. Go visit!

My boyfriend and I spent the day in Corona park and had plans to go to dinner at Sushi Yasu. We are avid sushi fans and have tried out many places in Manhattan, but this came on our radar and at the price point we had to try it. We did the $60 omakase, which included a lobster miso soup, platter of sashimi and 12 pieces of nigiri. The fish diverse from Japan, California and the NE and was all quite fresh. He add his own flavor flares to each of the pieces which made it only one of its kind. At the end, we added pieces of salmon toro, ikura and tamago which were also all tasty. They had a good sake list with several dissimilar grades - we got a dry sake and it paired with our meal well. Part of their restaurant is also a fusion restaurant which serves a variety of japanese homey foods - which we did not get a chance to try.

Waste of your money. Overpriced and terrible food. Saggy tempura and Bs sushi. The city have a lot better excellence of food and price. Go somewhere else. Please.

Hands down to the best sushi place in Queens or even better than other places in manhattan. I came here for the first time with my boyfriend. We sat on the bar because I had the $80 omakase. It is the same as $60 that has miso lobster soup & omakase starter plate with assorted stuff like fried botan ebi head, snails, tuna. but the omakase is 16 pieces while the $60 has 12 pieces. Great price for really good omakase! From the soup to the last dish of this meal is ideal! Everything was tasty. Its heaven in my mouth.

This sushi restaurant is middling at best because the sushi is tasteless. I ordered one tuna roll and one salmon roll and it took about 20 minutes to come out, meanwhile it should have been half that. When it finally came out, it looked good but when I put one piece in the soy sauce, it was just salt. So, I thought I was crazy when I ONLY tasted salt which lead to me tasting another piece without soy sauce. The sushi tasted like nothing. Just nothing. question by this occurrence, I just ate it and went on with my day.

$40 for 11 pc omakase + a hand roll - you can't beat that! My husband & I have gone twice in the past two weeks for the omakase. Both times we've ordered the 11pc, we received 12 pcs plus two small pieces of beef along with a hand roll. The sushi is yummy - not as great as some others but both times I felt this was the most worth it & satisfying omakase I've ever had. It's tasty and doesn't break the bank. The service is great, the waitresses are very nice and attentive. I also LOVE their fried squid (or octopus, can't remember). It's the best I've ever had. If we didn't live an hour away, we'd be here every week for the omakase. We will definitely come once a month

Been coming here for the past 2 years religiously for their omekase. Price point is perfect depending on how hungry you are. The chef is sushi yasu himself, he brings the dish to life and will only serve what he enjoys. His only style beings each series of flavor to life.

This is a hidden gem in Forest Hills. My boyfriend and I came here for the omakase for my birthday and Sushi Chef Yasu didn't disappoint. We sat at the sushi bar and ordered the $60 omakase. We were literally the only ones there so it felt like we were having a private dinner. The salmon with the butter, soy sauce, onion, and sautéed tomatoes was AMAZING. Something I've never had before, and something I'm still dreaming about. Also, the uni, was fantastic. It was so sweet and creamy! The fatty tuna was excellent and everything else in the omakase were also outstanding. I also recommend talking to Chef Yasu! He's a fun guy and has led quite the life. I can't speak for the other food here, but I would definitely recommend the omakase!

So nice we had to come twice! My boyfriend and I had been eying this place for a while, but had never gone in. Boy, am I happy we did. In a enormously oversaturated sushi restaurant area, this place is a gem. First, the employees are all actually Japanese! I've been to many Chinese ran sushi places, and they're good, but gotta love authenticity. (They even have a koi pond!) My boyfriend and I sat near the entrance. At first glance, it looks tiny and basics, but later we found out about the other side -- where the sushi bar is (and apparently everyone sits at). Neither of us were in the mood for sushi, so my boyfriend ordered a gyudon (beef) bowl and I had chicken teriayki. My entree was delicious (and came with broccolli with cheese and fried potato pieces). My boyfriend said his rice bowl was precisely like those he'd had in Japan (he lived there for a year so he'd know). Even the miso soup we had was fresh, with actual tofu pieces and scallions (no pre packaged mix!) Dessert (green tea cheesecake) was delicious as well.

Since my first review, my boyfriend and I have been here numerous times, and gotten the omakase numerous times as well! I've become an omakase addict! (Just wish it wasn't so costly, but one does get what they pay for here. ) Chef Yasu treats all of his patrons the same, whether you're a regular or a new guest. The new Asahi on tap is worth every currency of the $6.75 it costs. The machine was actually imported from Japan! There's also a lot of different sakes obtainable and always try to sit at the sushi bar. Also, Mr. O (Chef Yasu's new sous chef) is a hoot! Talk to him as well as Chef -- you'll be in hysterics!

A lot of changes at Sushi Yasu lately! First of all, they have revamp the menu -- there are a lot of pictures and descriptions to help guests know and decide what they want to order! They've been introduce a lot of izakaya (tapas style) plates lately. Not in the mood for sushi? Then have some chicken karaage (fried chicken) or yakiton (pork belly skewers) and wash it down with a draft Asahi (the keg comes straight from Japan!) Also, they have re-introduced the $40 omakase (so all those reviews that say it doesn't exist are outdated) -- it differs from the $60 and $80 in which there is no "gap plate" - no fried shrimp head, monkfish liver, tuna, octopus, and snail - just sushi and sashimi. It's a great option when one craves omakase but not the hefty price tag.

An unassuming Forest Hills staple in sushi. It celebrates American taste while still maintaining an aura of authenticity, Sushi Yasu is a favorite of mine for either dining in or taking out. The excellence and service is consistent, and serves to be a midrange option when you want slightly more authentic sushi without shelling out.

I'm a sushi lover. I forever get the omakase here. It's very traditional and their fish are fresh. Service is nice. We ordered the $80 omakase and the portion was perfect. Chef is really friendly and serves sushi fast. (There should be more pics but I was too hungry.)

I haven't been here in years, but boy was I happy I came here for dinner last night. I had a sashimi platter and every single piece of fish was so fresh, melt in your mouth deliciousness. Cause i ordered sake I got a flattering little app from the chef. Classy touch. I just wish they would expand or get a nicer space. Their sushi is too good to be where they are. almost almost up to par with some great spots in the city. Nevertheless I'm coming back.

traditional japanese restaurant with good sushi and unadon (eel over rice). They give alot of eel over rice, served warm in a customary japanese box. The toro (fatty tuna) is very fresh and tasty. The spicy yellowtail with avocado isn't mixed yellowtail the way most restaurants do. That's because this restaurant serves traditional japanese sushi. The yellowtail was tasty too. Miso soup was red miso and not yellow miso, which I favor and think tastes better.

The California roll was very mushy and the miso soup was very salty the edamame were good I used the free discount. Server was friendly. It was very slow and took a while for our sushi to come out

I ordered the omakase for $40. At first, I just wanted to give it a try, but it came out amazing. It came with a set of salad, appetizer, a hand roll and 12 pieces of sushi. Of the sushi, it included uni, sweet shrimp, toro, etc. I was astonished by the quality of food. Would absolutely recommend to others and come back again.

I visited sushi yasu before but this time I gave the omakase a shot. There were 4 guests already seated One sushi master took care of 6 guests counting us at the bar. We were greeted punctually. We opted for the $60 omakase. Overall, I'm satisfied. Not overfilling but content. The quality of the fish was very good. All the pieces had great texture, smooth and soft. The rice was very tasty as well. Good temperature and texture. We started with a small dish of squid and pickles. Then a plate of sashimi (2 tuna that practically melted in your mouth, 1 piece of raw shrimp, 1 shrimp that was fried, 2 squid, 1 piece that I'm still figuring out what it was). The rest were the nigiri picture below.

The omakase here is so underrate. I've been to countless omakase places in the city and paid well over double the price of omakase here, but I think the nigiri + experience here at Yasu tops many of those seats. The chef is very friendly and so is the rest of his staff. I can't speak for the regular food here as I've only had omakase here. Not sure why this place is rated so low but I will definitely be coming back here more often for omakase.

Visited Sushi Yasu today and was very let down. I came in around 3pm, just in time for their lunch special and ordered the 2 California roll combo. I also wanted to use the free check in offer but apparently it is only for orders of $15 or more. The food came out in a decent amount of time and visually looked good but omg the taste was horrible. The rice was mushy, way too warm and tasted like baby food.

This is my favorite local restaurant to go to. The fish is always fresh and the staff is friendly! I like to come here because I can have a reassuring time with friends and family and not feel rushed or crowded. There are also plenty of option for those who don't want to eat raw fish - teriyakis, soup noodles... when they're open for lunch on Fridays - Sundays, the lunch specials are also a good deal. You can get some rolls with a soup or salad for up to $15 (depending on the number of rolls). And if you have the time, the omakase is great also.
